Cliff Keen Invitational

The University of Michigan Wrestling Squad Captured the Team title this past weekend at the Cliff Keen Invitational in Las Vegas, Nevada. In one of the more competitive tournaments in beginning part of the season, Michigan faced tough competition from the likes of ranked teams such as Nebraska, Hofstra, Arizona State, Cornell and a tyraid of other teams. The grapplers competed over two days of gruling competition in their quest to win the team title.

The Cliff Keen Invitational Team Title was not the only acolade that the wolverines recieved, as 4 wrestlers earned individual titles in their respective weight classes. In the 125 lb weight class Mark Moos, seeded third defeated the top two seeds to gain the title and end the tournament with a perfect 6-0 record. Captains Ryan Bertin and Ryan Chruella showed why they rank amongst the best in the country as they also ended the torunament with a perfect 6-0 record, capturing titles in the 157 and 165 lb weight class respectively. Heavyweight Greg Wagner, seeded second squared off against first seed Matt Feast from the University of Pennsylvania in the championship match. This was not the first time that these two opponents squared off. They have previously competed in 5 matches with Feast winning them all. However, this was not to be Saturday night as Wagner ended the winning drought against Feast with a solid 8-5 victory. Wagner ended his day with a perfect 6-0 record and a individual title.

NWCA All-Star Classic

Fifth-year senior captain Ryan Bertin (157 lbs) suffered a tough loss at the hands of second ranked Jake Percival form the University of Ohio Monday at the National Wrestling Coaches Associations 39th annual Marine All-Star Classic. The NWCA All-Star Classis is a meet that is designed to put the best the country has to offer against each other. In order to compete in this event, one must be selected by a pannel of coaches. Bertin was picked out of every wrestler in the nation to represent his respective weight class.

After giving up three takedowns in the first period, Bertin found himself trailing 7-4 and was not able to rebound in the remaining two periods to end the match 11-7. The entire University of Michigan Varsity lineup next head to the city of Sin, Las Vegas, Nevada to compete in the Cliff Keen Invitatitional December 3-4.

Michigan State Open

After two tough days of competition the wrestlers of the University of Michigan come out of the Michigan State Open in East Lansing with 4 medal winners. Jeremiah Tobias (fifth-year senior) captured the 149 pound title in amazing fashion as he pinned 3 out of his 4 opponents. He capped the night by pinning Michigan state's Darren McKnight in the finals to take home the title.

Senior/Junior charles Kalil had a tough road to go down as he placed seventh in the 157 lb weight class. He finished the tournament with a 6-2 record. this was the best showing of this wrestling wolverine's career. Freshman Tyrel todd and Casey White also placed for Michigan taking fifth in the 174 lb weight class and 8th in the 197 lb weight class respectively.

Next up for Michigan is an individual match for captain Ryan Bertin (157 lb) as he represents Michigan in the 2004 Marine All-Star Classic. The All-Star Classic is an invitational in which the best of the best from all around the country compete. On Monday November 22, he will face off against second-ranked Jake Percival from the University of Ohio.

Body Bar Invitational

The Michigan Wrestling Squad rebounded after a tough defeat at the hands of Lehigh Thursday night to capture the Body Bar Invitational title Saturday in Ithaca, New york. Mark Moos captured the individual 125 lb title dominating every opponent that he faced keeping his undefeated season alive. True Freshman Craig Gillison showed a strong performance placing 3rd in the 133 lb weight class. JR Muldoon posted a strong 2-2 record defeating Henry Blue from Davidson and earning a major decision over Brian Bumpus from Sacred Heart. In the 149 lb weight class Eric Tannenbaum took 3rd place posting a 4-1 record. Taking over for Captain Ryan Bertin who did not compete in this tournament in order to compete in the all star duels was Jeff Marsh who finished 4th compiling a 5 and 2 record. Captain Ryan Churella showed this weekend why he deserves to be the captain as he claimed the 165 lb individual championship defeating top seeded Nate Yatzer from Edinboro 5-0 in the finals. Churella finhed the tournament with a perfect 4-0 record. Nick Roy collected team points for the Wrestling Wolverines as he finished the day with a 2-0 record in the 174 lb weight class. Joshua Weitzel placed third finishing with a 4-1 record in the 184 lb weight class defeating Jim Gibson from Edinboro in the consolation finals. Willie Breyer had an excellent day placing second in the 197 lb weight class. Greg Wagner closed out the tournament for Michigan by claiming the heavyweight title and ending the day with a perfect 4-0 record.

This is the first ever team title won by the Michigan Wolverines at their first ever appearance at the Body Bar invitational. The varsity squad next looks to compete at the Las Vegas Invitational December 3 through 4 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Michigan VS Lehigh

The Wrestling Wolverines lost a tough match at the hands of #2 ranked Lehigh 22-15 Thursday night in Bethlehem Pennsylvania. The grapplers started off strong with with a win in the opening weight class (125 lbs) as junior/sophmore Mark Moos defeated John Stout 11-9. True freshman Craig Gillison dominated the majority of the 133 lb match against Jeffrey Santo and was leading 6-0 until Santo caught Gillison out of position and scored the quick fall giving the Mountain Hawks a 6-3 team point advantage. In his varsity wrestling debut, junior/sophmore JR Muldoon (141 lbs) suffered a technical-fall at the hands of Cory Cooperman giving the Hawks a 11-3 lead. Michigan recieved wins at the next two weight classes as sophmore/freshman Eric Tannenbaum (149 lbs) and 5th year senior and captain Ryan Bertin (157 lbs) both recieved decisions closing up the gap to bring michigan within 2 (11-9). Top ranked Troy Letters of Lehigh (165 lbs) collected a major decision over senior/junior captain Ryan Churella to extend the lead 15-9. Michigan came back with an impressive win in the 174 lb weight class as junior/sophmore Nick Roy bested 4th ranked Travis Frick to make the score 15-12. Lehigh was the winner in the 184 weight class as Matt Cassidy defeated Michigan's Joshua Weitzel 9-4 resulting in a team score of 18-12. In the 197 lb weight class senior/junior Willie Breyer suffered a tough defeat at the hands of #1 ranked Jon Trenge making the score 22-12. Michigan came back in the final weight class of the night as heavyweight Greg Wagner defeated Paul Weibel 8-3 making the final score of the match Lehigh 22, Michigan 15.

Pre-Season Rankings and starting lineup

The University of Michigan Wrestling team will open the season ranked as the # 6 best team in the nation based on NWCA/InterMat rankings. The wrestling wolverines will face stiff competition as it faces 10 of the top 25 ranked teams in the nation including #2 Lehigh, #3 Nebraska, #4 Illinois and #7 Minnesota.

To aid them in their quest are returning starters and nationally ranked wrestlers, 16th ranked Mark Moos (125 lbs), 14th ranked Eric Tannenbaum (149 lbs), 3rd ranked Ryan Bertin (157 lbs), 6th ranked Ryan Churella (165 lbs), 18th ranked Nick Roy (171 lbs) and 4th ranked Greg Wagner (heavyweight)
